Girls For A Change is not just an organization I support, it is a mission I believe in with everything I have. As a board member and treasurer, I have a front-row seat to the extraordinary work being done every day to prepare Black girls in Richmond, Virginia to lead, to thrive, and to change the world.
"Seven years ago, I stood on the ground in Ghana. The experience was so transformative that I immediately called Angela Patton and said: 'We have to bring the girls here.'"
GFAC advances opportunities for girls at the margins — girls who are often overlooked or underestimated — through pathways that expand access, build skills, and prepare them to lead with confidence. When I invest in GFAC, I am investing in the future of our community.
On this page, you will find the campaigns and initiatives I am actively promoting. I invite you to join me in supporting each one. Whether you give $10 or $10,000, you are telling a girl in our community: your future is global, and we believe in you.
In July 2026, 18 Girls For A Change participants will board a plane in Richmond, Virginia
and travel to Ghana. This is not simply an international trip. It is a journey home.

Her Journey Home Ghana 2026 is a powerful leadership, cultural, and storytelling experience designed to deepen identity, confidence, and global awareness. Rooted in a year-long process of preparation, reflection, and cultural immersion, this experience invites Black girls to see themselves as leaders connected to a larger history and an even larger future.
The program is grounded in the wisdom of the Sankofa bird — the belief that we must look back to move forward. Leading up to the journey, participants explore identity and heritage, resilience and leadership, global Black girlhood, creative storytelling, and service and cultural immersion.
For many of these girls, this will be their first time traveling outside of the United States. Their first time stepping foot on the African continent. Their first time experiencing a place that holds ancestral, historical, and cultural significance. They won't just be visitors, they will be learners, observers, and leaders in formation.

"This isn't just a vacation; it's a leadership lab. Before they even board the plane, these girls are immersed in African culture and history. Once they land, they aren't just visitors — they are storytellers, learning to document their lives and their excellence in this digital age."
"Let's talk about the flex. Having a passport full of stamps before you graduate high school? That's a flex. Understanding a native African language and connecting with your heritage? That's a flex. Learning professional media production to tell your own story? That's a flex. But the biggest flex of all? Donating to tell a girl in your community that her future is global."
"My personal mission is to fund one girl. Our collective goal is to ensure all 18 have an experience that goes beyond the basics. We are building the next generation to be better than us by showing them how big the world truly is."

18 girls selected. The experience is intentionally intimate — with chaperones, alumnae, and a professional film crew documenting the journey.
Storytelling component: Each girl will produce a short film about her journey, debuted at the Annual Black Girl Showcase on October 2, 2026.
For many, this will be their first time traveling outside the United States and stepping foot on the African continent.

CHARLES IN GHANA 2019
In March 2019, Charles traveled to Ghana. What he experienced there was so transformative that he immediately called GFAC CEO Angela Patton, while still in Ghana, with a vision: bring the girls here. These are the moments that inspired the Her Journey Home campaign.

BUILDING CAMPAIGN
It's one thing to occupy space. It's another to own it. GFAC is raising $5.5 million to expand and renovate our building — a permanent home for Black girls to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

Because Black ownership and equity matters
Because our girls need to see how important they are to the community
Because it sets an example: Black women can own businesses and property
Because we've already invested over $100k in beautification of the space
Because it's fiscally important to own our space, not pay rent every month
Because we want girls to have a safe space where they can be themselves
Because we want girls to have a safe space where they can be themselves
VIRGINIA NAP CREDIT AVAILABLE
GFAC is an approved nonprofit for the Virginia Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP). For a minimum gift of $500, individual donors may be eligible for a 65% tax credit against their Virginia state income tax. Businesses: minimum $616 for tax credit eligibility.

Daughters is the award-winning documentary by filmmakers Natalie Rae and social change advocate Angela Patton — CEO of Girls For A Change. The film intimately follows Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja'Ana as they prepare for a momentous Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers.
Speaking openly about their aspirations, dreams, and the emotional toll of their fathers' absence, these girls reveal a profound wisdom and resilience beyond their years. Daughters sheds light on the complexities of familial bonds strained by the criminal justice system and emphasizes that the foundation of community healing lies within the family unit.
Executive Producer Kerry Washington invites you to watch, share, and take action. Host a watch party, sign up for an impact screening, or simply stream it on Netflix and share it with someone who needs to see it.
